Churches & Monasteries

The churches and monasteries of Mykonos are estimated to be over 800. Tradition says that the churches of the island are so many as the days of the year!

Many were built in the 17th and 18th century, but some are even older (Byzantine period) and are protected historic monuments.

Apart from cultural reference points they are also elements of everyday life of the inhabitants, if there is a high religious sentiment, tradition and dedication to fulfill a vow.

Most churches in Mykonos are small, with little decoration and an arch. The prevailing colors are red and brick red on the outside curve of the roof.
On the inside they are decorated with works of popular icons, images, carved wooden temples and offerings.
